Mazda Demio Price in Kenya | Features & Prices

The Mazda Demio is now one of the most common small cars in Kenya. You will see it everywhere. It is in Nairobi traffic and in car yards from Mombasa to Nakuru. Fuel prices keep going up, so many buyers are moving away from big cars. They want something small, cheap to run and easy to maintain. The Demio fits all three.
So how much does it cost? The Mazda Demio price in Kenya ranges from KSh 680,000 to KSh 1,600,000. Older models from 2010 to 2013 sell for KSh 550,000 to 750,000. Newer 2018 and 2019 models sell for KSh 1.2M to 1.6M. The final price depends on the year, mileage, engine size and whether the car is locally used or foreign used.
Khushi Motors have sold used cars since 2009 and we are KCCI award winners. In this guide we share what we have learned about the Demio. You will get real prices, full specs, fuel consumption, import duty costs and a comparison with the Toyota Vitz and Honda Fit.
Mazda Demio Prices in Kenya 2026: Quick Price Table
Here are the current market prices as of 2026. These are based on real listings from dealers and car yards across Kenya.
| Model Year | Foreign Used Price | Locally Used Price |
| 2010 to 2012 | Not importable | KSh 550,000 to 680,000 |
| 2013 to 2014 | Not importable | KSh 680,000 to 850,000 |
| 2015 to 2016 | Not importable | KSh 850,000 to 1,050,000 |
| 2017 | Not importable | KSh 950,000 to 1,150,000 |
| 2018 | Not importable | KSh 1,100,000 to 1,350,000 |
| 2019 | KSh 1,300,000 to 1,600,000 | KSh 1,200,000 to 1,450,000 |
A few things to note about these prices.
Only 2019 models can be imported in 2026. Kenya has an 8 year import rule. In 2026 the oldest car you can bring in is a 2019 model. Anything older must be bought locally.
Foreign used costs more than locally used. A foreign used Demio comes straight from Japan with verified mileage and a known service history. That is why buyers pay more for it.
Mombasa prices can be slightly lower. Duty paid units at the port sometimes sell cheaper than the same car in Nairobi. But always check the condition before you get excited about a low price.
Diesel models cost more. The Demio XD diesel sells for about KSh 100,000 to 200,000 above the petrol version of the same year. Many buyers pay the extra because the diesel saves a lot of fuel. We will cover this in the fuel consumption section.
What about models after 2019? Mazda retired the Demio name in 2019. From 2020 the same car is sold as the Mazda2. So if you see a Mazda2 in a Kenyan car yard, that is the new Demio with a different name. In 2026 these newer units sell for around KSh 1,400,000 to 1,900,000 depending on the year, grade and mileage. If your budget allows it, the Mazda2 gives you newer safety features like lane assist and a 360 degree camera.

What Affects the Mazda Demio Price in Kenya?
Two Demios of the same year can have very different prices. Here is why.
Year of manufacture. This is the biggest factor. A 2019 unit costs almost double a 2013 unit. Newer means a higher price but also a longer life ahead.
Mileage. A Demio with 50,000 km will always cost more than one with 150,000 km. Low mileage means less wear on the engine, suspension and gearbox.
Engine size and fuel type. The Demio comes in 1300cc petrol, 1500cc petrol and 1500cc diesel. The 1300cc is the cheapest to buy and insure. The 1500cc diesel is the most expensive but gives the best fuel economy.
Grade or trim level. Common grades are 13C, 13S, 15S and the XD diesel. Higher grades come with alloy wheels, push start, a better infotainment screen and extra safety features. A 13S costs more than a basic 13C of the same year.
Condition and history. Accident free cars with a clean logbook and service records always fetch better prices. A repainted or repaired unit should sell for less.
Mazda Demio Full Specifications
Here are the key specs for the popular fourth generation Demio (2014 to 2019), the model most buyers in Kenya look for today.
| Feature | Details |
| Engine options | 1.3L petrol, 1.5L petrol, 1.5L Skyactiv-D diesel |
| Power output | 91 hp (1.3L petrol), 104 hp (1.5L diesel) |
| Transmission | 6 speed automatic, 6 speed manual on some units |
| Drive type | 2WD, with 4WD available on some Japanese units |
| Fuel tank | 44 litres |
| Seating | 5 seats |
| Ground clearance | About 145 mm |
| Boot space | About 280 litres |
| Safety | Dual airbags, ABS, stability control, rearview camera and lane assist on higher grades |
A few honest points from our experience. The interior quality feels a class above its price. The seats are comfortable and the dashboard looks modern even on 2015 units. The boot is smaller than the Honda Fit though. If you carry a lot of luggage every day, keep that in mind. The ground clearance of 145 mm is fine for tarmac but you should drive carefully on rough estate roads and over high bumps.
Mazda Demio Fuel Consumption in Kenya
This is the main reason the Demio sells so fast. Here is what owners actually get on Kenyan roads, not the factory brochure numbers.
| Engine | Real World Consumption |
| 1.3L petrol | 16 to 18 km per litre |
| 1.5L petrol | 14 to 16 km per litre |
| 1.5L Skyactiv-D diesel | 20 to 23 km per litre |
The diesel is the star here. At 22 km per litre, a full 44 litre tank can take you over 900 km. That is roughly Nairobi to Mombasa and back on one tank. This is why the diesel Demio costs more to buy. The extra fuel savings pay back the difference quickly if you drive every day.
In heavy Nairobi traffic expect slightly lower figures. Stop and go driving can drop the petrol units to around 12 to 14 km per litre. Even then, the Demio remains one of the most fuel efficient cars in its class in Kenya.
One small warning on the diesel. The Skyactiv-D engine needs clean fuel and regular servicing. Skipping service intervals can cause injector and DPF problems that are costly to fix. Buy diesel from trusted stations and service the car on time.
How Import Duties Affect the Mazda Demio Price in Kenya
Many buyers ask why a Demio that costs around KSh 400,000 in Japan sells for over KSh 1.3M in Kenya. The answer is taxes and import costs.
When you import a car, KRA does not tax the price you paid in Japan. It uses its own value called the CRSP, which stands for Current Retail Selling Price. KRA reduces this value based on the age of the car, then applies taxes one on top of the other in this order.
- Import duty charged on the customs value
- Excise duty charged on the customs value plus import duty, with the rate depending on engine size
- VAT at 16% charged on top of everything above
- IDF and RDL charged as smaller percentage levies on the customs value
Because each tax is calculated on top of the previous one, the total adds up fast. For a small car like the Demio, total taxes often come to 50% or more of the customs value. On top of that you pay shipping from Japan, port charges, clearing agent fees, inspection and NTSA registration. These extra costs usually add another KSh 150,000 to 250,000.
As a rough rule, the landed price of a Demio in Kenya ends up close to double its price in Japan. Tax rates and CRSP values change from time to time, so always confirm the latest figures with the KRA duty calculator or a licensed clearing agent before you commit. Mazda Demio vs Other Small Cars in Kenya
The Demio competes directly with the Toyota Vitz, Honda Fit and Suzuki Swift. Here is an honest comparison based on 2026 market prices and what we see in the yard every week.
| Feature | Mazda Demio | Toyota Vitz | Honda Fit | Suzuki Swift |
| Price (2017 to 2019) | KSh 950K to 1.6M | KSh 1M to 1.7M | KSh 1M to 1.6M | KSh 900K to 1.4M |
| Fuel economy | 16 to 23 km/L | 15 to 18 km/L | 15 to 19 km/L | 16 to 19 km/L |
| Boot space | Small | Medium | Best in class | Small |
| Spare parts | Easy to find | Easiest to find | Easy to find | Fairly easy |
| Resale value | Good | Best | Good | Fair |
| Driving feel | Best in class | Average | Good | Sporty |
Where the Demio wins. Fuel economy, especially the diesel. Interior quality. Driving feel. The Demio is simply more fun and more solid on the road than the Vitz.
Where the Vitz wins. Resale value and spare parts. Toyota parts are available in every corner of Kenya, from Kirinyaga Road in Nairobi to small town garages. A Vitz also sells faster when you want to upgrade.
Where the Fit wins. Space. The Honda Fit has the famous magic seats and a much bigger boot. If you carry family and luggage often, the Fit is more practical.
Our honest advice after 17 years in this market is simple. If you want the lowest running costs and a car that feels good to drive, take the Demio. If you want the easiest resale, take the Vitz. If you need space, take the Fit.

Financing Options for a Mazda Demio in Kenya
You do not need the full amount in cash to drive home a Demio. Here are the common financing routes in Kenya in 2026.
Bank asset financing. Most major banks finance used cars. They typically ask for a deposit of 20% to 30% of the car price and finance the rest over 1 to 5 years. The car logbook stays jointly registered with the bank until you finish paying.
Sacco loans. If you are a sacco member, this is often the cheapest route. Sacco interest rates are usually lower than bank rates and the process is faster for members with a good savings record.
Dealer hire purchase. Some dealerships, including us, can arrange flexible payment plans or connect you with trusted financing partners. This saves you the back and forth with banks.
For a 2018 Demio at KSh 1.25M, a typical plan looks like this. You pay a deposit of about KSh 312,000 at 25%, then monthly installments on the balance over your chosen period. Talk to us and we will help you find a plan that fits your budget. You can also explore more options for Used Cars for Sale in Kenya.
Tips Before You Buy a Used Mazda Demio
A few simple checks can save you from an expensive mistake.
- Verify the logbook on NTSA TIMS. Confirm the seller is the real owner and the car has no loan attached to it.
- Check the inspection report. For foreign used units, ask for the QISJ or JEVIC inspection certificate. It confirms the mileage and condition at export.
- Inspect the body. Look for repainting, uneven panel gaps and signs of accident repair.
- Test drive it. Listen for gearbox jerks and suspension noise. The Demio automatic should shift smoothly.
- For the diesel, check service history. A poorly serviced Skyactiv-D engine can develop costly injector problems.
- Buy from a trusted dealer. A dealer with a physical yard and a track record gives you somewhere to return if anything goes wrong.
